What is Laser Therapy?

In-home Class IV Laser Photobiomodulation (PBM) sessions for dogs and cats are tailored for acute or chronic pain conditions. PBM works through chromophores, specific molecules that are stimulated by certain wavelengths of light (photons), which trigger chemical cascades within cells that primarily increase the energy (ATP) available within cells. This is similar to the absorption of light that occurs by plants during photosynthesis. Damaged cells and tissues are targeted while the healthy tissue is left alone. All pets feel is a mild warming sensation. With a few treatments, pain and inflammation are decreased, and healing is accelerated.

The best treatment area is a place where your pet can feel comfortable but without any reflective surfaces like mirrors or windows close by. The laser does emit light, and all humans in the area must wear eye glasses that are protective against particular wavelengths of light. Animals that won’t tolerate the protective goggles do just fine with a towel over their eyes. If they won’t allow holding of the head, treatment is more challenging. And, that’s it. Treatment for only takes a few minutes and they are done.
